The Anchor - Wonderfully adaptable holiday home

Wonderfully adaptable holiday home for celebrating special occasions. We had 7 couples all able to have their own bathroom and telly. The kitchen was excellently stocked with more than enough crockery, utensils, white goods etc. the hot tub and outdoor gaming room was ideal for a winter getaway. Location is great with good country pubs and good quality takeaways all within walking distance. Highly recommend.

The accommodation was perfect for a larger group with great facilities to keep everyone entertained

Karen L  - 23.09.23 -09/10

Hot Tub and games room was delight, great family cottage and had everything you needed. Thank you for letting our family stay.
Monmouth isn't to far and is a lovely little town.

Vicky L  - 11.09.23 - 9/10

Being a former pub the house is very quirky within it's lay out and with the original featurs of the bars and bar table and chairs.
The house has lots of space and is great for large family get togethers and stays.

Ross-on-Wye is a nice little place to visit and has many cafes and small shops.

Jacqueline S 27.08.23 - 9/10

The house was lovely, very well equipped kitchen and it was useful having 2 dishwashers. The games room was very popular, as was the hot tub. Dining room was great - lovely to be able to get everyone round a table together. We were a bit disappointed with the NOW TV which had been promised but it turned out you had to take out a subscription or have an existing login, which was no good. Some of the beds weren't all that comfy, and could do with upgrading. But mostly we really liked the house and enjoyed our stay.

We particularly enjoyed visiting Puzzlewood and would recommend that. We also liked Goodrich Castle (great cream tea!), and the viewpoint at Symonds Yat rock. Some of our party did horse riding and some did llama walking at Severnwye Equestrian and Llama centre, that was lovely. We did the Forest of Dean sculpture trail which was a nice walk and a good cafe, even if the sculptures themselves were a bit underwhelming.

Absolutely wonderful.

Josephine S - 18.6.23 10/10

Enjoyed the house, plenty of space for 14 of us, very well kitted out, and a great location for exploring a beautiful area.
For those who enjoy a walk, Symons Yat viewpoint then down to The Ferryman pub on the river

Hayley A - 06.06.23 10/10

kitchen was well equipped, games room and hot tub were a great addition, all bedrooms were comfortable and with en suites. Fab property overall.
days out: Canoeing down the river Wye. Go ape for both kids and adults, Puzzlewood

Charlotte G - 30.05.23 10/10

Beautiful property with everything you need, friendly and helpful host, great communication leading up to the stay.
Days out: White Castle Vineyard, Abergavenny.

Priscilla W - 23.05.23 9/10

There are a lot if gates to consider, but I don’t have any alternative suggestions.
Days out: Go Ape for youngsters.

Elaine M - 15.04.23  10/10

The house was perfect for our mixed aged family. The kitchen was well equipt, nothing wanting. The games room and hot tub was great. Fantastic dining room for eating and playing board games. En suite in every room, could not have been better.  Days out: We enjoyed Puzzle Wood. We enjoyed the maze and the butterfly zoo. We had lots of walks, views over Symonds Yat and in the forest with the rather odd sculptures. We would have enjoyed canoeing but it was cancelled because the water was too high.

Claire M - 08.04.23  10/10

Overall very happy. Awesome hot tub. Would highly recommend,  We loved this house - great flow and good for all ages. We went to Goodridge castle and the Forest of Dean.

Laura B -  27.03.23  10/10

The bed/bath configuration is brilliant. The cooking facilities are great (cookers are a little slow to heat up) everything is really clean, comfortable and well maintained and the gardens are secure and dog friendly. A perfect place for a big group.  Days out:  We walked to Symmonds Yat, walking up the footpath behind the house, along the river and then up the Yat.  A lovely 10 mile round trip.

Sandra K - 19.03.23  9/10

Downstairs bathroom had no heat, radiator possibly needs attention. EVERYTHING else excellent. Wonderful space

Anthony S  06.03.23  10/10

Louise was fantastic. House was everything and more than we expected. For a family group from 65 to 3 yrs old it was perfect

Tom M  15.02.23  10/10

Great layout of the property and so much space for everyone! Games room absolutely made it - would definitely recommend for a family get together!

Katharine H   04.01.23  09.01.23

Great amenities and really well equipped for a large group of people - carefully thought through to cater for all. Thank you

Ceri H   04.01.23  10/10

We had an amazing time staying at the Anchor. There was 21 of us and the house was big enough that we could enjoy all being together but we weren’t under each others feet. The games room was fab for passing the time and bringing us together.

Anita W   20.12.22  10/10

The games room and hot tub were great. The kitchen was well stocked. Perfect for a big family Christmas.

Days out:  Lovely local walks.  We spent most of our weekend in the house.

Ashley M  13.12.22   9/10

We loved the house and had an amazing weekend. The only thing we would have liked was a better mattress for the baby's cot. The fold-up one that comes with the cot is extremely thin and not very comfortable for a baby to sleep on. Other than that, we couldn't fault the place!

Days out:  We had a lovely walk at Yat Rock

Carol J   05.12.22    10/10

It was lovely to be able to get all the family in one place and to have a dining table where we all could fit round it .
There was plenty of space for us all , so you could also go off into another room if you needed a bit of space .
Hot tub was great also the games room which was rather cold .
The bedrooms were very nice but some of the double beds could have been a bit bigger.
The kitchen was great plenty of space ,big oven, plenty of fridges and freezer ,good idea to have two dish washers

Adrian C   14.11.22   10/10

The house was amazing, had everything and more for a weekend away with a large group of friends.  Days out:  Forest of Dean forestry centre for bike rides, walks and go ape.  Also a cafe and park for the kids

Tracey Y    17.10.22     10/10

Property is well situated for walks in the Forest of Dean. House itself is excellent for a large gathering. All the bedrooms were very good with en-suites. Games room was well equipped and a fun place for some to gather. Good sized kitchen and we had a chef from Two Simmering Pans on the Saturday evening who cooked us an excellent meal

Lesley P    16.10.22     9/10

The house really worked for my birthday celebrations for 19. Dining room and kitchen were great. Lounge and separate bar good. Hot tub and games room lovely addition. Didn't have full set of champagne glasses or small tumblers. Minor considerations. A couple of rooms have on suites that could do with updating but could highly recommend the property which is in a beautiful area.  Lovely walks by the river

Alison M            10.09.22          8/10

We particularly enjoyed being able to seat all of us in the dining room for our celebration meals. (We we’re a family of 19 + a dog)
The hot tub and games room were a big hit with all the family
We’ll equipped kitchen.
All bedrooms very comfortable

Pool table needs a little TLC but didn’t stop us having fun !
Our time there together went far too quickly… everyone wants to return 😊

We loved the games from it was a great addition to the house and the hot tub

Mary E        19.07.22          9/10

All very clean.Great to have two dishwashers and toasters. Beds comfortable, nice bedding and towels.A top sheet would have been good to have as the duvets were hot and weather was boiling.some smaller tumblers for juice or gin! A few more plastic cups for children.

 Sarah S       16.07.22         9/10

The fact that we were so close to the river- it was a very hot weekend!

Ann G           09.07.22               08/07/22

The bedrooms were lovely, great to have 3 fridges, 2 dish washers   and a freezer.
We enjoyed the table tennis and pool. The children loved the hot tub.
We were lucky it was hot when we visited and parasols would have been good for the picnic tables.

Mark S         06.06.22            8/10

The house was perfectly suited for three generations of adults and children. Each bedroom having its own bathroom was a real bonus, and both the sitting room and dining room were big enough to accommodate us all. With the games room and snug/bar area providing an escape for those that wanted it.

Laura C       23.05.22         10/10

The Anchor is a beautifully converted former pub so is quirky and spacious. It's comfortable and clean and in a great location, just a short walk down to the river. The hot tub was large and most importantly HOT! The games room was a good size so lots can fit in! Everyone in our party loved the property and said they'd all definitely come again! Thank you so much for a fantastic stay!

Maggie P         19.04.22                       10/10

Thank you all at bhhl for making our family break so memorable -wouldn't change a thing

Susan C          12.04.22                  9/10

Plenty of space, Games Room good for teenagers, hot tub a hit, plenty of space for our dogs to run around in, the ability to separate the front from the back gardeners so that the hot tub and games room could be accessed without the dogs getting in the way.
Televisions not used.
Appreciated by all the family.
Lack of internet access an asset!
Utility room was too cold at night for the dogs to sleep in as the roof was uninsulated.

Laura B  -   07.03.22      10/10

The house was superb. We have stayed in four different houses with this group and this was the best. Our only issue was that there weren't enough forks for 22 people! A totally brilliant experience. Thank you.

 Sally W  -  28.02.22       10/10

We didn’t venture out and about, we stayed in the house and made the most of the facilities.

Everyone in our party thought The Anchor was an amazing place to stay. It was well equipped for large parties, we had everything we needed. There was plenty of space for our party to chill and find peace and quiet if they wanted. The games room and hot tub were great also. The fact the house had some of the old pub features such as two bar ares was a lovely touch.
We will definitely be recommending the house to friends and family and will look to revisit at some point hopefully to explore the beautiful area of Lydbrook.

Nigel S  - 31.01.22      9/10

Everything was catered for even milk and biscuits on our arrival which was a lovely touch and lady was most helpful

Ashley S -  19.01.22         10/10

We only had a long weekend here in January, so there wasn't much open. We had a lovely few hours at the sculpture walk in The Forest of Dean.

The games room was a lot of fun and many happy hours were spent playing table tennis, table foot ball and pool. Some of the equipment, like the table tennis bats were pretty worn, and the baize on the pool table was a bit uneven but that's what happens when it's well used. It was a fantastic addition to our weekend. The hot tub was wonderful. Really lovely and hot. We spent many happy hours in there too. Wonderful and a real treat.

Duncan S  - 11.01.22        9/10

It is a lovely house . We all enjoyed our stay. It is very well equipped. The space ,furnishings and extras like the hot tub and games room mean that all ages are well catered for .we expected netflix and sky as these are mentioned in the descriptions and would have taken dvds we wanted to watch had we realised they we not there. Also we found no board games and again would have taken them had we known . Maybe change the information provided? A dustpan and brush would have been handy .

 Xanthe G  - 04.01.22     9/10

Monmouth and Ross for shopping

House is brilliant

 Nick H - 29.12.21       9/10

 Plenty of walks near by.

Plenty of space in house so can always. have quiet time some were. WiFi was in & out

Georgia P - 16.11.21       9/10

It was excellent! Would definitely go back.

Trevor L - 05.10.21       9/10

Some of your description is unclear. Tennis is listed as a leisure facility, not a local leisure facility and one of our party arrived with their tennis gear and were disappointed.  There are very few tumbler sized glasses suitable for fruit juice and spirit drinkers. We loved the dinning room. Great to have a large table we can all sit at and socialise over a good meal.  Days out - Our paddle boarders, canoeist and walkers all loved the location.

David H -  27.09.21      9/10

We had a brilliant experience - everyone absolutely loved the house and there was plenty to keep us busy over the two nights we stayed at the Anchor.  One tiny thing - we probably just weren't looking properly, but we could only find one cloth to wash up with / wipe surfaces down. Again, we maybe just couldn't see where there were more, but it would have been helpful to have had at least an extra cloth.  Apart from that (very) minor point, the trip was perfect! Will definitely recommend The Anchor for future large group holidays.  Days out -Canoeing on the River Wye with Canoe the Wye was a real highlight!  Thanks

Ella M - 31.08.21

The house was great and provided everything we needed. We did have an issue with the hot tub on the last day but Louise the house manager came straight out to try and help. Days out - We visited the Maize Maze which occupied the family for the afternoon. The facility could definitely do with some upgrading and TLC but kept family members aged between 7 -72 busy.

Angela B - 28.08.21

The Anchor at Lower Lydbrook is the most amazing house to stay in, well equipped with lots of space - we absolutely loved it!

Angela C - 31.07.21

We really loved the whole stay away. The house is amazing, well catered for the large group with a fab games room and hot tub.  Days out - Canoeing on Symonds Yat, Ross on Wye Shops

 Shelly S  -  30.07.21

Symonds Yat good for canoeing. Nice pub restaurant for meals

Liz C - 05.06.21

 House great
Plenty of room and very well equipped. Lovely location. Only thing would have liked bigger garden at back. Orchard too steep and prickly for younger children.   Beechenhurst country park and Symonds Yat river cruise. Rhos on Wye quaint shops and delicatessen

 Esther D - 01.06.21

We absolutely loved staying at The Anchor. It had everything we could have wished for for a holiday. We would highly recommend.  One small point of feedback: on the stairs coming down from the bedrooms towards the front door, there is a low bit of ceiling and my son (who is 6 foot 2!) kept whacking his head on it. Perhaps a "Mind your head" sign and a bit of padding on this very hard corner might be advised.  Days out - Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail
